چکیده

Author’s Note: When an Arnold Arboretum volunteer develops an interest in conifers, he inevitably comes under the stimulating influence of Alfred Fordham. So it happened with me. One day Al remarked on a photograph he had taken of Pinus attenuata. The branches were covered with closed cones all the way back to the tree trunk. The conversation then led to the question of how long seeds can remain viable in these cones. Since no answer was easily

Longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) fire scars reveal new details of a frequent fire regime

Methods: Cross-sections of 19 remnant pines exhibiting 190 fire scars were collected from a 1.2-km area. Tree-rings and fire scars were precisely dated and analysed for the purpose of characterizing past changes in fire and tree growth. Temporal variability in fire occurrence and seasonality was described for the preand post-European settlement periods. Seasonality of historic fires was determi...

Evolutionary fire ecology: lessons learned from pines.

Macroevolutionary studies of the genus Pinus provide the oldest current evidence of fire as an evolutionary pressure on plants and date back to ca. 125 million years ago (Ma). Microevolutionary studies show that fire traits are variable within and among populations, especially among those subject to different fire regimes. In addition, there is increasing evidence of an inherited genetic basis ...

Modeling the Effects of Fire on the Long-Term Dynamics and Restoration of Yellow Pine and Oak Forests in the Southern Appalachian Mountains

We used LANDIS, a model of forest disturbance and succession, to simulate successional dynamics of forests in the southern Appalachian Mountains. The simulated environments are based on the Great Smoky Mountains landscapes studied by Whittaker. We focused on the consequences of two contrasting disturbance regimes—fire exclusion versus frequent burning—for the Yellow pine (Pinus L., subgenus Dip...

Mountain Pine Beetle Dynamics and Reproductive Success in Post-Fire Lodgepole and Ponderosa Pine Forests in Northeastern Utah

Fire injury can increase tree susceptibility to some bark beetles (Curculionidae, Scolytinae), but whether wildfires can trigger outbreaks of species such as mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins) is not well understood. We monitored 1173 lodgepole (Pinus contorta var. latifolia Doug.) and 599 ponderosa (Pinus ponderosa Doug. ex Law) pines for three years post-wildfire in the Ui...

Understory plant communities and the functional distinction between savanna trees, forest trees, and pines.

Although savanna trees and forest trees are thought to represent distinct functional groups with different effects on ecosystem processes, few empirical studies have examined these effects. In particular, it remains unclear if savanna and forest trees differ in their ability to coexist with understory plants, which comprise the majority of plant diversity in most savannas. We used structural eq...
